A New Season In Life (Update After a 7 Month Hiatus) - Cubicle Chic
A New Season In Life (Update After a 7 Month Hiatus) - Cubicle Chic A New Season In Life (Update After a 7 Month Hiatus) Home Life, Life as a blogger, Lifestyle November 11, 2019 1 Comment Itâs been 7 months since I last opened my WordPress editor. Letâs just let that sink in a little bitâ¦â¦Before this hiatus, I blogged almost non-stop for 4 years. What a strange seven months itâs been, with me not having produced a single article. Today, itâs with a heavy heart that I share this with you guys, my dear readers⦠Iâve had nothing to say. Did you think I was gonna say Iâm shutting the blog down? Oh, no. Never. I worked too hard all those years for Cubicle Chic to suffer the death of unknown causes. Sure, being a full-time Mom takes up all the time and energy I can muster. Sure, I set out to become a full-time blogger 2 years ago and have come short in every way imaginable. Sure, Iâve had a major case of an identity crisis because of owning a blog name Cubicle Chic and having no cubicle to call mine. But hereâs the thingâ¦Even when I had nothing to say, I still have this burning desire to write. To create. To produce. To leave something behind. Call me crazy. All of this got me thinking about something tangential yet sobering. People say social media is for the superficial and that itâs all about showing off. Itâs easy to categorize it all as egotistical Millenials putting up a glamorous front by curating every envy-worthy detail of their life and neatly packing them into the 9 squares accompanied by carefully researched hashtags. Itâs not a wrong statement to make and most of us are guilty of it at least at some points. But I think it taps into something deeper and more primal.A poet writes, a sculptor creates, a photographer captures what he/she sees in the world and a writer writes. When itâs a singular, recognizable, and ârespectableâ skill (the kind that takes time and effort to develop), the output of it is deemed artistic and productive. The problem with creating anything on social media when you are a layman is that it seems like it tak es no effort. Itâs easy because Facebook has made it easy for you to showcase photos, writings, art or anything that you want to share with the world. And after the post becomes public, you receive âlikesâ. The Godforsaken likes. Likes that ruin everything. Likes that taint the purest of intentions. Likes that mask the desire to create and make it look like youâre groveling for attention. But itâs not that simple. At least not for me. There is joy in the act of creating something. Choosing the right word to convey my thoughts. Putting phrases together that sound beautiful. Obsessing over the order of sentences for more clarity. This is why I write.Which brings me to the future of Cubicle Chic.I still want to add value and be of service to my readers. But going forward, Iâm going to write things that I have personal interests in. Books that inspire me. Ideas that invigorate me. People and stories that bring me to tears. I want to write about things that uplift me, and hope fully, through my writing, I can uplift you, too.In the meantime, Iâd like to share a few things that have been enriching my soul lately. Four Things That Brought Me to Tears Last MonthItâs a collection of a book, a Facebook clip, a TV series, and a movie. If you enjoy things that make you think while shedding a few tears, click on each of the thumbnails below or just bookmark them. You donât regret it, I promise. 1. Call Me American; 2. Ray Chen â" The Swan; 3. Modern Love; 4. Last Christmas 1. Book: Call Me American by Abdi Nor Iftin. This was a momentous book not only because it gave me a thorough understanding of the atrocity that has been ravaging Somalia, but the humanity that perseveres in the face of pure evil. It also shows me how similar we all are, regardless of our culture, religion, race, and life goals. Itâs the most beautiful book Iâve read in 2018. 2. Facebook video: A short clip of him rehearsing with a harpist before a big concert at the Walt Dis ney Concert hall a few days ago. Even though there are people talking in the background and some general noise, he played so beautifully it gave me goosebumps and made me cry! 3. TV Series: Itâs an Amazon Prime TV series based on the New York Times column with the same name. Many of them are about unconventional love and love that are beyond just romantic. My favorite one is episode 1! 4. Movie: Itâs a simple Rom Com that anyone would enjoy. But there are some good messages that the movie is conveyingâ" helping others is ultimately what brings you happiness. It also happens to be the first movie Iâve seen with the husband in theater in this entire year. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie including the 10 minutes I spent crying and sniffling! Stay tuned for more. Thank you for reading!

On resting and recharging, creating space, keeping quiet and taking my own advice (aka Im Taking A Break) - When I Grow Up
On resting and recharging, creating space, keeping quiet and taking my own advice (aka Im Taking A Break) - When I Grow Up Yknow the saying that what makes you crazy about other people is something that you hold within/about yourself? Its why jealousy and comparison can lead to good things, like recognizing your Big Dreams. Its why your triggers can show you your values, like being annoyed at someones lateness really means that Respect for Others is something you hold sacred. Ive been noticing lately how bothered I get when my clients push, push, push. When they force themselves to work overtime. When they dont create space to recharge their batteries. When they dont step away from their business at all. I tell them to take a break. To not look at emails all weekend. To put a work-free vacation on the calendar, even if its just for a couple days. To go play and create and read, sans pressure for productivity. I tell them to trust themselves and the foundation theyve created. That the work will be there when they get back. That their audience will be there when they get back. That nothing will break and nobody will die and everything theyre working for wont disappear. And yetI rarely follow that advice myself. I recently took 2 weekdays to go to Sesame Place with my family. It was an incredible trip and will give me a lifetime of happy memories. What would have made it better? Not bringing my computer (so I can do work at night and in the morning), not checking emails (sure, I had my out of office set up, but I still *had* to reply to my clients, right?), and getting Facebook off my phone (but I had 2 groups starting that day! I needed the app to moderate!). So now, I take a deep breath and say: Im taking a break. I wont be blogging or newsletter-ing until early October. Between now and then, youll only see Women of the World announcements (up next: Jodi Womack on Momentum!). Basically, Ill just be here to let you know about Events That Are Happening. Thatll be it til then. I also commit to saying No to anything thats asked of me in August and September. If its not on my calendar, its not happening. I also solemnly swear to have work-free days (not being in Facebook groups, not checking or answering work emails, not having calls) from Sept 1-Sept 6, with the exception of my Its Business Time group call. Im gonna have a long weekend like the normal people (aka employees) do. Imagine that.

Fairygodboss of the Week Linda Goler Blount
Fairygodboss of the Week Linda Goler Blount When Linda Goler Blount started working in engineering and epidemiology, she probably had no idea shed be a CEO one day. But now, she leads a kollektiv dedicated to a cause she is truly passionate about ensuring Black women are physically, emotionally and financially healthy. The Black Womens Health Imperative (BWHI), based in Washington D.C., combines research, market intelligence, social media and policy analysis to implement programs and inform legislation that allows Black women to make the best decisions for their health.Blount told Fairygodboss how she got involved in such an important cause, then gave her best advice for getting employed at an organization you love. Plus, she shared where she draws inspiration to make a difference everyday.Fairygodboss of the Week Linda Goler BlountPresident and CEO, Black Womens Health Imperative (BWHI)Washington, D.C.Tell us a little about yur career. How did you get to where you are now?For a publ ic health professional, Ive had an unusual but exciting career trajectory. I came to this work by way of engineering and epidemiology. Right out of school, I started by working for a hospital system, and then the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) designing GIS systems to track HIV infections. After 5 years at CDC, we packed up the family and moved to Trinidad and Tobago where I got to see health and health care from an entirely different perspective. I worked to set up disease surveillance systems, insurance systems and consulted with ministries of health on a number of ways to keep women safe from STIs and violence. When we returned from Trinidad, I made a slight detour and went to work for the Coca-Cola Company. While it was very unusual for an epidemiologist to work for Coke, I learned something tremendously valuable. We in public health have a product to sell, just like Coke. Our product is health. I used that insight to guide my work at the American Cancer Soci ety, where I was the first ever Vice President of Health Disparities and then with United Way of Greater Atlanta where I led all programs. This prepared me for the position at BWHI, where our approach is quite different from most health organizations. We start with the assumption that there is nothing wrong with Black women that we are inherently strong, resilient and passionate about our health. We combine research, market intelligence, social media and policy analysis to implement programs and inform legislation to make koranvers Black women can make the best decisions for their health. What is an accomplishment that you are proud of?We recently released Black Women Vote 2018 A National Health Policy Agenda. It is the first ever legislative agenda focused on Black womens health. We have made this agenda freely available to community groups to make sure women are educated on important health issues and understand where their candidates stand on key health issues and to hole them acc ountable. We will update it and use it until the 2020 general election as well. What is a challenge that youve faced and overcome? When I took this role, we were still feeling the impact of the financial crisis and its impact on fundraising. Our budget was 80% government funded and just the year before, there had been a sequestration which cut our funding by 50%. That was a scary place to be. So, I reached out to my board and network for help. I was open and honest about our situation and, in fact, used to begin all of my talks with we need help. I found that honesty, however difficult to admit, paid off. We have nearly tripled our revenues and government funding is now 40% of our budget.Who is YOUR Fairygodboss? and Why?My Fairygodboss is Louise Johnson, my maternal grandmother. She was superintendent of a detention center in 1940s Mobile, AL. She overcame all manner of racial and gender discrimination to lead a very challenging organization with grace, love and compassion for the in mates, many of whom were able to leave the detention center and be successful. And she made an unbelievable gumboWhat do you do when youre not working?I love to cook and have family and friends over. There is nothing more nurturing to my spirit than good food, good music, good company and laughter. We routinely solve the worlds problems over dinner. If you could have dinner with one famous persondead or alivewho would it be?Byllye Avery the founder of the Black Womens Health Imperative. She just turned 81 and is still going strong.Lightning Round What is your karaoke song?Respect by Sister Aretha.Lightning Round What is your favorite movie?Sneakers.Lightning Round What book would you bring with you on a desert island?Poor, leid Dumb by Capital Seed Intelligence Unit. Its a book on behavioral economics.Lightning Round What is your shopping vice? What would you buy if you won the lottery? My shopping vice is sigh lipstick. If I won the lottery, Id buy property on which I build housin g (and an amazing kitchen) for all of my family and friends to get together from time to time. Then, Id give the rest of the money away to education and health organizations. What is the 1 career tip youd like to share with other women who want to have successful careers like you?I have the privilege of speaking with women on a regular basis and am often asked this question. My response is always that you must know what you love and know what has you saying this is where I need to be and what I need to do. That may change over time, and thats ok. Work towards doing that. It might mean being a volunteer at first. But even if you cant get paid, and even if you can only do that thing a few hours a week, you will feel good about yourself and your life. That will matter and youll know you matter. Why do you love where you work?Everyday, I get to live what I talk about. I am blessed to work with women who are not only smart and talented, but committed to ensuring Black women are healthy ph ysically, emotionally and financially. The issues we address can be very difficult but we support each other, we laugh and we celebrate together. We all get to work with women across the country
